The Weighted Grade Calculator works out your final course grade when your instructor combines several categories — such as homework, quizzes, midterm, final exam, and participation — each worth a different percentage of your overall mark. This is different from a simple average, since a category worth 40% of your grade should influence the final result far more than a category worth 5%, and manually applying each weight correctly gets error prone once there are more than two or three categories.
To use it, add a row for every graded category listed in your syllabus. For each one, enter your score as a percentage (for example, 88 for an 88% average on homework) and the weight that category contributes to your final grade (for example, 20 for 20%). Add as many categories as your course uses, and remove any row you do not need. Once every category is filled in, press "Calculate Final Grade," and the tool multiplies each score by its weight, adds the results together, and divides by the total weight entered — which correctly handles the case where your weights do not (yet) add up to exactly 100%, such as when some assignments are still outstanding.
This calculator solves two common problems for students. First, it lets you check your current standing partway through a course, using only the categories that have been graded so far, by leaving out anything not yet completed and entering the actual weights of what has been graded. Second, and more usefully for planning ahead, it lets you test "what if" scenarios: enter your confirmed scores for finished categories, then try different hypothetical scores for an upcoming final exam to see exactly what result you need on the remaining assessment to reach a target overall grade such as 90% for an A.
Because the weighting scheme varies enormously between courses and instructors — some use flat category weights, others drop the lowest quiz score, and others weight a final exam differently for students who improved across the semester — always check your syllabus for the exact rules and adjust the categories you enter here to match. This tool performs a straightforward weighted average based on the numbers you provide; it does not automatically apply drop-lowest rules or curve adjustments unless you account for them yourself when entering scores.
